When God Calls: Room For Jesus

Updated: Dec 25, 2022

As we approach the holiday season and the celebration of Jesus' birth, have you ever stopped to think about the challenges and obstacles that Mary and Joseph faced leading up to that fateful night in the stable? Despite the difficulties they faced, they trusted in God's plan and ultimately made room for Jesus in their lives.

Luke 2:4-7

“And because Joseph was a descendant of King David, he had to go to Bethlehem in Judea, David’s ancient home. He traveled there from the village of Nazareth in Galilee. He took with him Mary, to whom he was engaged, who was now expecting a child. And while they were there, the time came for her baby to be born. She gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him snugly in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no lodging available for them.”

Reflecting on Mary and Joseph's Journey

As we celebrate Christmas and the birth of Jesus, it's easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. But have you ever stopped to think about the challenges and obstacles that Mary and Joseph faced leading up to that fateful night in the stable? Despite the difficulties they faced, they trusted in God's plan and ultimately made room for Jesus in their lives. As we reflect on their story, let's also consider how we can make room for Jesus in our own lives and trust in God's guiding hand.

When Mary and Joseph were told they had to travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem for a census, they knew it wouldn't be an easy journey. Mary was nearing the end of her pregnancy and the trip would have been tiring and uncomfortable. But they trusted that God had a plan for the birth of Jesus and that He would provide a place for them to stay in Bethlehem.

Unfortunately, when they arrived in Bethlehem, they found that there was no room for them. They were eventually forced to find shelter in a stable, where Jesus was born and laid in a manger. This humble beginning foreshadowed the humility and selflessness that Jesus would later demonstrate in His ministry on earth.

Trusting in God's Plan

As we reflect on the story of Jesus' birth, let's remember that God is in control of all things and that He has a plan for our lives. Just like He provided a place for Jesus to be born, He will provide for us and guide us in His will. Let's trust in Him and follow His plan for our lives, even when it takes us on a difficult journey.

Making Room for Jesus

And let's make room for Jesus in our hearts and in our lives, just as Mary and Joseph made room for Him in the stable. This requires us to prioritize Him in our daily lives and to make time for Him in our schedules and in our thoughts. It also means letting go of anything that might be hindering our relationship with Him and surrendering our lives to Him completely.

Examining Our Own Lives

As we conclude this devotional, let's take some time to consider our own actions and attitudes. Are we making room for Jesus in our lives and trusting in His plan for us? If not, let's commit to making changes and seeking to follow Him more closely.

Guided Prayer

Dear God, we thank you for sending your son Jesus to be born on earth. We are grateful for the story of Mary and Joseph's journey to Bethlehem and their trust in Your plan for Jesus' birth. Help us to have that same faith and trust in Your will for our lives. Guide us and lead us in Your ways, and give us the strength and courage to follow Your plan for us. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.
